The St. Croix Friends of Denmark Society is a social organization open to any interested resident eager to foster goodwill between the Virgin Islands and Denmark.
How it started...
The Danish legacy is the backdrop to the daily lives for all who live on St. Croix. In order to nurture the shared interest of Crucians and Danes, the St. Croix Friends of Denmark Society was founded in 1964. The shared heritage of 184 years, from 1733 to 1917, covers the history of Danish colonial rule through slavery and emancipation to the eventual transfer of ownership to the United States. Despite the horrors of much of this legacy, there is a unique bond, both cultural and emotional, between Denmark and the former Danish West Indies, and an abiding fascination for many in Denmark to learn and understand that history.

How it continues…
In 1967, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Transfer Day, the Virgin Islands hosted the first group of members of the Danish West Indies Society, our Danish counterpart and sister society, for a week-long festival. It is a biannual event with exchange visits taking place between the two countries. Visitors stay in the homes of members of the respective societies, madamejane.com enjoying not only local attractions and social events, but the pleasure of making new friendships.
St. Croix Friends of Denmark also sponsors cultural visits to the island – the Danish Boys Choir in 2017 is one example – as well as scholars, musicians, and dancers. We have also we welcomed cadets and officers of the old tall ship Danish training vessels.
Publications of books and pamphlets covering Danish West Indies history have also been sponsored
